At Home: My Snake Plants, Succulents, and Aloe Vera Plants

For the longest time, I was scared to own plants because I knew that I would feel so bad if I killed them. This is also my philosophy with one day becoming a dog owner, by the way. I do plan on having a pup in the near future, so let's revisit the dog bit later, shall we? Getting back on topic here: At the beginning of last year, my mother bought me my first plant. She wanted me to have something that was small and hard to kill, so she chose a lucky bamboo plant. Here we are, almost two years later, and I still have that lucky bamboo. I didn't post a photo of it because she was resting peacefully in my bathroom, and I didn't want to disturb her. She's grown a lot since I initally got her, and seeing her growth is what inspired me to buy more plants.

My favorites are snake plants (also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongues or Sansevierias) and succulents, so those are the ones I tend to buy. A few of my plants did die, which sucks, but I'm still new at this plant thing, so it could have been a combination of things. Of course there's the thing of plants not having enough water, but you can also kill a plant by watering too much. Trial and error, for sure. I wouldn't say that I have a green thumb at all, but it's nice pretending I do. I usually buy my green babies from Lowe's or Home Depot. I will say that I think Lowe's has the better selection.

The cool thing about plants (or so I've read) is that there are health benefits to having them in your home. Snake plants thrive well in low or bright light, they are hard to kill, and can go long bouts without water (this makes me nervous, which is why I sometimes over-water). They also add oxygen at night. They are really good to have in bedrooms.

Studies also show that having houseplants can make you concentrate more, so they're really good to place in your office, or wherever it is that you create.

I almost purchased a Yucca plant today, but decided against it because my place is super small, and I don't want it to look like a real-life jungle up in here. But it's definitely on my list to buy in the near future.
